New Delhi: The well famed Historical drama, based on the principle of medicine, the ancient workings of the Tang Dynasty, and references to the later Ming Dynasty, Apothecary Diaries, started as a Japanese light novel series, and quickly gained fame for its plot, character design and use of certain plot points and devices to weave a tale of mystery filled elements along with the budding flower of love.
Origin of The Series
The light novel began serialization in 2011 and has been continuously posted online since Apothecary Diaries was published as a novel with a single volume in 2012 and then as a light novel series in 2014.
With quickly gained fame for its plotline and genre, the anime television series adaptation produced by Toho Animation Studio and OLM aired from October 2023 to March 2024, and now with a satisfactory end to the first season, the anime is set to release a season 2 on 10th January 2025.

Plot
Apothecary Diaries revolves around Maomao, a young girl working as an apothecary in the red light district. Her life is simple, find herbs, collect and use them in her remedies, and give them away to the brothels, however, things don’t remain so simple anymore when on her everyday hunt for herbs, she runs into the wrong people- and is kidnapped, inevitably sold to the Imperial Palace as an indentured servant.
Despite her situation, Maomao holds onto the shreds of her curiosity, keeping in the shadows until the tenure of her 2 years serving in the palace comes to an end. However, tensions arise when Maomao discovers that the newborns and concubines of the emperor have fallen critically ill without a deft source for it.
Knowing the fact that she is but a mere servant, and should not be involved in this, Maomao finds her curiosity rising and decides to investigate the case. Therefore, from her experience as an apothecary, she successfully solves the mystery of their illness. Even after such a feat, Maomao wants to keep her identity anonymous. But it seemed that her wishes were not to be respected, as her actions and how she cured the illness seemed to come to the attention of the court’s Eunuch, Jinshi.
Despite Maomao’s hopefulness of not getting wrapped up in even more royal and political drama, the Eunuch who finds out about her sends for her and other servants, calling them to his office for inspection to figure out the identity of the mystery healer that illness, which turns out to be Maomao.
Despite fearful for what she may end up in, Mamao finds that for some strange and astute season, Jinshi seems oddly interested in her.
